CARS: NASCAR? s Black Widow lives at Barrett-Jackson - FOXNews

For the majority of all its 62 year history, NASCAR has been a battleground for U.S. automakers, each of them tried to superiority on the track as a way to sell more of their cars.

In 1957 Chevrolet decided to create a dominating NASCAR race car and set Chevrolet cars to beat in the minds of buyers in the país.conocido as "Black widow", the 1957 Chevrolet was one of the most feared race car of the Decade.

Living in SPEED on Thursday at 8: 30 pm this, a professionally restored "Black Widow" tribute car will be auctioned off at the Las Vegas of Barrett-Jackson.Como collector car all cars at Barrett-Jackson, will be auctioned on reservation, which means that the highest bid takes it.

The story behind the black widow is an interesting idea of how they worked the NASCAR and auto manufacturers back in the day.

On 6 June 1957, automakers, a coalition of U.S. Automobile Manufacturers Association had formally banned car, which prohibits the advertising of the results of the race, characteristics of the cars race, speed racing providing cars rhythm tracks and other promotion activities this occurred in response to strong pressure from Congress to the result of an accident in the 24 hours of Le Mans that killed more than 80 people when a car ran off course 1955 and crashed into the stands, in the explosion in a ball of fire.

Rather than have the Congress legislate a withdrawal of the competition, car manufacturers made themselves.

At the same time, they were doing all that as possible behind the scenes to circumvent their own case GM restricciones.En, hired former Hudson lead engineer Vince Piggins race and moved to Atlanta, where he established a business known as southern engineering and development co., or SEDCO, which ran Nalley Chevrolet in Atlanta.

Under the watchful eye of Piggins, SEDCO built the first black widow for the competencia.El car was based on the sedan utility of Chevy One-fiftieth of economy – or 150, for short - and had a lot of go-fast special items: a fuel-injected, 283-cubic inches, 283-horsepower, tres-velocidad small-block Chevy engine manual transmission, wheels of six-lug, 20 gallon and no radio, gas tank lighter or arm rests.

In April 1957, together Piggins a so-called manual to the "1957 Chevrolet Stock Car competition Guide", which explains in great detail how Chevrolet dealers could build their own Black Widows. The manual, which was sent to 411 Chevrolet dealers contained 170 made GM individual pieces that were needed to convert a street 150 Chevy car stock a full race car in NASCAR.

"This valuable booklet is always to make known to distributors, as well as in the case of individuals with a vocation for performance, techniques to high safety and value of entertainment for all those who enjoy stock-coche in the highest traditions of sport competition" GM wrote in the introduction to the manual.

The guide had some interesting details. The choice of colour, noted "green is taboo in most American Racing circles" an old superstition on sport.

And recommended the 150 model race because, "It is robust and reliable, low cost, with no unnecessary to obstruct the performance, weight and meets all requirements of sanction (NASCAR)".

GM ordered SEDCO to shut down after the prohibition of races, but in private hands and - allegedly - support factory, the Black Widows were not successfully ran entire campaign for a long time.Buck Baker would go on to win Championship in NASCAR Grand National of 1957, today the equivalent of the Sprint Cup, a widow negra.A despite the fact that the rules were changed in the middle of the season to outlaw the fuel injection.Others that forced them to include Speedy Thompson, Rex White, Bob Welborn Fireball Roberts.

Until today, the black widow is still a topic of much discussion among fans of Chevrolet and thus of intense debate.nadie knows exactly how many Black Widows were built or how many survived, and the details of the cars are a source of endless debate and fascination among hard-core fans.

The car to be auctioned tonight at Barrett-Jackson is a restoration of rotisserie of two years duration, carried out entirely by the specifications of the "Guide contest stock car 1957 Chevrolet" created by SEDCO.

"Comes with the correct drive motor and 283cid/283hp, 20 gallon gas tank fuel injection two shocks per tire, six-lug, pneumatic good wheels delete, delete radio, remove lighter, not arm rests, a visor and correct Firestone tyres.""" No escatimado expenditure and attention to detail is very clear,"said sellers.""In this example is about more near of which produces SEDCO in 1957 as you can get".
