The Office's Jenna Fischer, Pam, aka s you have long been a passionate supporter of animal rescue efforts, having hostage and about a dozen abandoned cats over the past decade for Kitten Rescue, a Los Angeles-based fostered cat and kitten rescue organization.Who knew?My favorite discovery: After finding a pair of abandoned kittens on the set of The Office, she managed to foster and find a home for the aptly named Dunder Mifflin and duo.

I caught up with Fischer a few months ago to learn more about her work, as she was preparing to host the Kitten Rescue rescue "Furrball," the organization ' s annual fundraiser, for the third year in a row.

Kindness: You ' see fostered several cats over the years! What inspired you to get involved with this rescue work?

Fischer: I started with Kitten Rescue in 2001 after coming across to flier. [Kitten Rescue was founded in 1997 by a single cat rescuer, Sue Romaine.] The organization is responsible for more than 1,000 cat and kitten rescues every year.[Volunteers additionally spay and neuter hundreds of feral cats to fight the animal overpopulation epidemic in Los Angeles.] My dog had just passed away from liver disease, and I felt this void. I wanted to use all the knowledge I ' d gained from nursing my dog and put that to good use. It was also really natural for me to do this. Growing up, my family had always adopted our pets from the shelter.

So I placed a call, and the Kitten Rescue team came over to my house for an interview to make sure I wasn't ' t some cuckoo bird.I then went through training, and afterwards, they placed an animal with me. I just enjoyed it so much! During the years that I fostered cats, I never took more than one case at at time.I ' m happy to say that I had a 100 percent adoption rate with all my cats going out to homes... almost to dozen in total. The best part is that I get updates and pictures from their new families. Just today, I received a picture from one of the adoptive moms!

Kindness: It must take a lot of work to get the cats ready for adoption. How does it work? Was it hard fitting it in with your busy schedule acting?

Fischer: I would take in abandoned cats and kittens that have been pulled from shelter before they ' re put down, and then work to rehabilitate them physically and socially, getting them ready to be placed in a new home.11 They ' re adoptable, I would then have them spayed or neutered. With all the trips that you have to take to the vet., it does require a lot of work. When the job on The Office came up (in 2005), I didn't ' have a lot of time to do it, so I started answering [Kitten Rescue ' s] help line instead. You ' d be surprised how many calls you get on a Tuesday afternoon. I also have served as a caseworker, overseeing adoption cases.

Kindness: I read that you hostage to cat in college.More colleges are allowing students to have pets in the dorm rooms these days. What are your thoughts on this?

Fischer:I was a sophomore in college and had my own apartment at time. [Fischer grew up in St. Louis and attended Truman State University]. College students that are thinking about adopting to pet need to be ready for the commitment. At 18, may be difficult for some to do that. Maybe they want to live in Europe for a year or have to move across the country for a job after graduation.What will happen to their animal if they choose to move?

In fact, a large percentage of cats come to Rescue Kitten for similar reasons. With more people losing jobs or having to move into apartments because of the economy, people sometimes get desperate and end up abandoning their pets. I'm really happy to hear that dorms are allowing this, but students can' t forget that a pet is for life and is a big commitment to take on.

Kindness: Tell us more about the Kitten Rescue ' of Fur Ball event that you ' re hosting.

Fischer: It's their annual big celebration with a silent auction, and it of my third year as host. It ' s going to be heartwarming and inspirational with rescue stories being shared throughout the dinner and presentation. And I ' m excited that Angela (Kinsey), Oscar (Nunez), Zack (Woods), Kate (Flannery) and Ellie (Kemper) from The Office will be there! [Fur Ball was held Sept. 11 and raised more than $ 65,000.]

The organization has really grown over the years.It's really exciting because it started as a grassroots rescue group in Sue s garage.I remember attending my first meeting in her living room. Now they have to rescue center and sanctuary, and over 250 volunteers! It ' s the biggest all-volunteer cat rescue organization in Southern California.

Kindness: For Office fans, what ' s next for Pam? Will we see her adopting kittens anytime soon?

Fischer: [Laughs.] Angela will remain office cat lady.We have some great episodes this year. The first scene of the first episode is really awesome.We usually do 10-12 scenes a day, but this scene took an entire day to shoot. Every single member of The Office is involved. I don ' t want to say too much than that, or I might ruin the surprise that it is!

Kindness: How can others get involved in animal rescue efforts, even if they ' re not in the Los Angeles area?

Fischer:Every city has a local rescue group, and there are so many ways to help.From hands-on fostering to working a phone line to helping foster parents to the vet. transport.Also, many rescue groups hold adoption fairs and need volunteers to help set up or even to just play with kittens cages.In fact, as part of the rehabilitation process, kittens need to be handled by different people, which helps socialize them.That could be a fun thing for a family to do.
